Windblocking Thermal BB Cap Pull Over Ear Flaps

20080207BBCF

NOTE:  We've now added a 1/2" wide elastic chin
strap that mounts to the front left & right rounded
corners of this unit and is completely detachable.
The extra strap unit keeps the front flaps tighter to the
face when zipping down the road on the 4-wheeler or
when doing other activities with high wind speeds.

A great gear item to have when fighting the winds & foggy wetness on the way to the Summit of Mt Washington in New Hampshires White Mountains

NOTE:  Baseball Cap is NOT Included

For those people who just don't want to part with wearing their favorite baseball cap during the cooler & cold weather months of the year, we've just help you extend the season a little longer.

Baseball Cap Pullover Ear warmers or flaps are not new to the market, however one that is actually designed to fully cover your entire ear, the back of your neck and the rear opening of the ball cap is!  Most, but not all of the "other" ballcap pullover flaps also do not provide any windblocking protection on their outer fabric layer.  As well we have not yet seen one other competitive brand that gives you a warming 300 wt synthetic polyester inner layer as we provide, as most if not all other brands stop short at the 200 wt fabric level.

Our "New" Windblocking Thermal BB Cap Pullover Ear Flaps are built with a (2)two layer technical fabric process and we use only USA manufactured synthetic polyester fabric materials.  Our outer layer is 100% thermal windblocking and DWR water repellent treated, while the inner layer is a warming heavy weight fleece.  We also provide 20% or more surface area with our units, so as to ensure that your head gets coverage in the areas that need to be covered up like the ears and the neck

Nothing replaces a good warm thermal hat during the extremely cold temperatures of the Winter months, but on the milder days of Winter and the colder days of Fall and early Spring, these pair up nicely with the ball cap for keeping the piercing winds off of your ears and neck.

Yes, we did numerous test runs in sub-zero tempertures during the Winter months heading out to our Friday and Saturday night local college hockey games and wore them on occasion at the 07 Iditarod with temperatures to -20F (-28.8C)and our ears and neck stayed warm.  The issue in the colder temps when you have shorter hair on your head, is that the baseball cap material on the top of your head just doesn't do a very good job in keeping that area warm.  So in those conditions, we had warm ears, a warm neck and a cool top of the head at times, but again these really aren't designed for sub zero temperatures like we did some of our testing in.

The portability of these units is nice as well, because when you go inside a store or as temperatures warm up, you just pull them off, roll them up and put them in your pocket.

We use only the highest quality USA manufactured synthetic polyester that meets U.S. Military specifications and other USA made insulation materials in our construction processes.

Suggested Temperature Rating Range:  +32 F to -20 F (0C to -29C)

Some people wear a hat on their head when the tempertures turn cold, while others only want something that's going to keep their forehead and ears warm while not messing their hair up too much.  So to satisfy the occassional requests that we get for headbands, we have put our design twist on what we feel the best one should be for keeping your warmer - longer.

Our Prairie Snowstorm Windblocking Thermal Headband does just that with its 2 layer technical fabric design.  The Outer Layer is 100% thermal windblocking, DWR water repellent and breathable, while the inner layer provides additional synthetic polyester insulating warmth.

On top of the exceptional warmth and windblocking protection that this item offers, we have also made the front forehead part of the headband taller in width then the status quo and also gave it better coverage over the ears and rear of the neck.

We designed our Prairie Snowstorm Windblocking Thermal Hats for those potential new customers that live in normal Winter conditions, where cold is considered +5 F to +35 F degrees above zero.  These customers want a hat for these everyday Winter temperatures, but also want one that works great when the thermometer falls in the -minus temperature range as well.

Our Prairie Snowstorm Hats are built with a 2 layer fabric system that not only blocks out 100% of the wind with the Outer Shell fabric, but also provides thermal warmth with both layers of technical fabric combined that produces an average insulating thermal R-value of R-2.5.

The Prairie Snowstorm Hats do not have the superior wicking capabilities of our Arctic Thermal Hats, but with that said, they will also not create as much "head" heat because they do not have the same amount of insulation layering in their construction.

The Prairie Snowstorm Hats do provide moisture vapor breathability in both layers of the technical fabric that we use and the Outer Shell is also DWR water repellent to keep the rain or wet snow from penetrating from the outside in.

The design of this hat is similar to what a standard "stocking hat" looks like, whereby you can either pull it straight down over the ears with no sides rolled up, or you can pull it further down and then roll the sides up.  But please note, this is the "only" similarity!  Technically speaking, there is not much else out in the market place that compares to this hat as we have designed and built it.

We use only the highest quality USA manufactured synthetic polyester that meets U.S. Military specifications in our construction processes and we are giving the the Prairie Snowstorm Windblocking Thermal Stocking Hat the following conservative temperature rating range:  +32 F to -30 F.  (0C to -34C)

This hat is excellent for just about any outdoor activitiy that you can think of, in or around the suggested temperature rating range that we have suggested.  This is and excellent hat for those people that have to work full-time outside during the Winter time and even for those that may only work mornings and afternoons as Crossing Guards for their local school district.

Dimensions Laying Flat:
- 10 1/4" - 260.35mm top of hat to bottom edge tall
- 11 1/2" - 292.1mm outer width at head opening edge
- 10 3/4" - 273 mm inner width diameter at head opening edge

SIZING:  Maximum circumference measured around your forehead to be comfortable of 22.5" - 571.5mm or less when the side edges are folded up and 23.25" - 590.55mm when wearing the hat straight with no folding of the side edges up.   The sizing dimensions are based on a non-tight head squeezing fit and are our best approximations only!

Suggested Temperature Rating Range:  +32 F to -40 F (0C to -40C)

We designed our Prairie Snowstorm Windblocking Thermal Hats for those customers that live in normal Winter conditions, where cold is considered +5 F to +35 F degrees above zero.  These customers want a hat for these everyday Winter temperatures, but also want one that works great when the thermometer falls into the -minus temperature range as well.

We designed these hats for people who desire a simple pull-over "beanie" style hat that pulls on over the head and covers down to the bottom of the ears.  The style cut is nothing new, but the fabric configuration is, because it will keep your head warmer then most of the rest of the beanie style hats out in the market.

- Moderate moisture wicking & temperant warmth throughout the recommended temperature ranges.

We didn't forget about people with smaller head sizes when we released our larger head size Kap Bridgman Hats previously, it just took some time to fit in getting all of the patterns completed and the first piece sample sewn for review.  So, especially for our great female customers with smaller head sizes, here's your size Kap Bridgman Hat.

The local's call it Kap Bridgman, while others know it as Cape Bridgman, but at the end of the day it's still located at 83.4166667 latitude and -26.7 longitude.  If you find it on your global atlas, you will know that it is located in a Country that is primarily dominated by glacial ice and harsh Winter conditions.

In recognition of the harsh weather conditions in this part of the World, we have designed and named this new hat after 83.4166667 latitude & -26.7 longitude, because we are confident that it would do an excellent job if one ever made its way there.

We designed the Kap Bridgman hat with many objectives in mind and based on the testing results I think we accomplished our goals.  Therefore what you get with this hat is as follow:

  • The core of the hat is designed to better regulate the heat build up in temperatures above zero, when the ear and chin flaps are in their "top" locked postion.  This is accomplished by the cut and design of the base hat that only pulls down over the top tips of the ears.
  • The core area of the hat still has to have great insulating power for the extremes and we did that through our 4 layer fabric system that offers an R-5.75 of insulation.  The inner most layer surrounding the head provides superior thermal moisture wicking for passing the heat vapors, while the other 2 inner layer's provide their own special insulating characteristics.  The Outer Shell layer is 100% thermal windblocking, breathable and DWR water repellent treated for maximum protection.
  • The pull down ear flaps are built with a 3 layer protection system, which is basically 2 layers of the Outer Shell technical fabric that surrounds a layer of reflective technology polyester insulation and combined produces an R-4.40 of insulating power.
  • Other vaguely similar styled hats finish the balance of the hat off with a short cap brim and 3/4" strips of hook & loop velcro material for securing the pull down flaps together, however we didn't short cut.  Our hat comes with a full baseball cap style brim for blocking the elements out of your eyes and our ear flap securing surfaces are all made with heavy duty 1" wide hook & loop velcro type material.

We use only the highest quality USA manufactured synthetic polyester that meets U.S. Military specifications and other USA made insulation materials in our construction processes. Our Kap Bridgman Arctic Thermal Hat's also contain 15% "Earth friendly green" technical fabric material that is made from re-cycled plastic bottles, which is then processed into the finest synthetic polyester fabric in the World.

This is the perfect sized hat for most female explorers or sled dog mushers looking for the same great hat that the guys are wearing.  Males with smaller heads or Juniors can put this hat to use as well.

SIZING:  Maximum circumference measured around your forehead to be comfortable of 22.25" - 565.15mm or LESS.  Hat comes with hook & loop adjuster straps located inside of the back of the hat for adjusting to tigher head fit if desired.

Recommended average temperature ranges for wearing:  +20 F to -100 F (-7C to -73C)

Comparing Our New Kap Bridgman Arctic Thermal Hats>>>

The local's call it Kap Bridgman, while others know it as Cape Bridgman, but at the end of the day it's still located at 83.4166667 latitude and -26.7 longitude.  If you find it on your global atlas, you will know that it is located in a Country that is primarily dominated by glacial ice and harsh Winter conditions.

In recognition of the harsh weather conditions in this part of the World, we have designed and named this new hat after 83.4166667 latitude & -26.7 longitude, because we are confident that it would do an excellent job if one ever made its way there.

In the mean time the best we could come up with for final testing of this new hat prior to our Winter 2007-08 release, was the 2007 Iditarod.  Unfortunately, the best the 2007 Iditarod could dish out weather wise upon our musher testers wearing this hat, was estimated windchilled temperatures of -90 F to -100 F below zero up on Rainy Pass.  I guess we'll just have to settle for those conditions as being an acceptable extreme for validation purposes.

As it was explained to us by one of the mushers wearing a Kap Bridgman hat during the Iditarod, "When I looked around at some of the other mushers that were stranded with me on the top of Rainy Pass in temperatures that we estimated to be -100F, the pain of the frost bite and wind burn on their faces looked like what you only see in pictures.  On the other hand the only pain that I was feeling up there was in my knee, which I had busted up pretty badly on the way to Rainy Pass.  Because of your "new" hat that I was wearing, along with one of your Drop Pad Neck Gators and a pair of your big mitts (Extreme Element Mitts), I didn't have any frost bite or extreme wind burn at all..anywhere....zero!"(B. Stamm) What more can we say?

We designed the Kap Bridgman hat with many objectives in mind and based on the testing results I think we accomplished our goals.  Therefore what you get with this hat is as follow:

  • The core of the hat is designed to better regulate the heat build up in temperatures above zero, when the ear and chin flaps are in their "top" locked postion.  This is accomplished by the cut and design of the base hat that only pulls down over the top tips of the ears.

Everything that is true about the base Kap Bridgman Arctic Thermal Hat is also true with this one, however we've also incorporated the following great suggestions that will increase the number of users for this hat and will also take care of those mushers, expeditioners, climbers or anybody else that wants to use it at night in conjunction with a head lamp "without" having to use the elastic head straps, which to some are a nuisance:

  • We've added or sewn in a strip of LOOP velcro material across the front of the hat, that measures 2 inches wide by 4 inches long.  The user of this hat that uses a strapless headlight unit with the wired battery pack that is worn inside of their jacket, only has to make sure that the back of the headlamp unit itself has a strip of HOOK (picky side) velcro material glued to the back mounting of the unit, in order for it to secure to the new Kap Bridgman Expedition Arctic Thermal Hat.
  • In addition, we've added 1 inch wide hook and loop strips to the middle of each side of the hat, so that the user can secure the battery unit cable that runs out of the back of the light unit, to either the right of left side of the hat.  The hook/loop strips are about 1 1/2" long and have an additional length of looped nylon sewn on, so that there is something to grab onto when pulling the two strips apart.
  • We also have widened the securing hook & loop used to secure the ear flaps under the chin from 3/4" wide material up to 1" wide hook & loop material.
  • Another great suggestion the we have incorporated, is a small rear outside pocket that is tabbed with hook & loop, that is there for the storage of a couple extra headlamp bulbs.  Now you'll always know where to find them out on the trail.
  • Finally, we sewed into the rear inside bottom edge of the hat, a set of adjusting hook and loop strips that will allow the hat to be used by our customers that are not in the Large/XL hat size range, but have a head size that is more in the Medium size range.  So to our female customer base, the additon of the sizing straps should allow this hat to work for most of your heads as well....hooray.  Please note that when the adjustment straps are secured in for smaller head sizes, the rear bottom edge of the hat will pucker out just a little, however when the flaps are pulled down, all of the heat will still be sealed in for total warmth.

SIZING:  "Approximate" minimum circumference measured around your forehead to be comfortable of 22.5" - 571.5mm, to an approximate maximum around the forehead circumference of 24.00" - 609.6mm.

I guess you could call it innovation by design, as we have continued to push the limits in what can be done with selected Cold Weather Gear & Accessories.  In this case, we have further revolutionized the Winter Hat with our Expediton Series XWick 3.4 TRH Windblocking Thermal Wicking Rear Neck Flap Hat, which is yet again in a class by itself.

The Expedition Series XWick 3.4 TRH rear neck flap hat has been developed for the user that participates in extreme cold weather activities under high exertion circumstances.  Maybe you're a climber heading to the summit of Everest in the Himalaya's or perhaps doing one of the other of the Seven Summits like McKinley, either way temperatures at the top could easily be a frostie -50F plus when you get there.  Despite the cold you've muscled and sweated your way to the top.

Further, perhaps your expedition fancy is skiing or kiting across the North or South Pole or something less extreme like high altitude snow shoeing in virgin powder.  In any or all of these examples you are exerting your body and producing sweat moisture while trying to balance your body heat and minimize the build up of perspiration or breath mositure that with the wrong gear will freeze up at some point.

XWick 3.4 TRH  Hat is designed for the user that is under physical exertion better then 50% of the time in face biting cold temperatures, where you need to stay warm and protected from frostbite, but you also need better moisture transfer from the area around your head.  The following is the secert to the XWick 3.4 TRH:

  • The Rear Neck Flap Hat is built with 3 technical fabric layers.  Layer 1 the Outer Shell, is a soft to the hand feeling Hardfaced thermal windblocking, breathable and DWR water repellent fabric.  This fabric is resistant to picking from brush and has a pretty good abrasion resistance as well.

  • The 2nd or middle layer is a mid-weight synthetic polyester fabric that supplies warmth without being hot and also offers additional breathability.  The 3rd or inner layer is the XWick factor, as it supplies excellent thermal mositure wicking and transfer.

The 3.4 TR is the combined thermal insulation value of the entire gear unit, which is a Thermal R value of 3.4.  The final alpha component of H again stands for the Hardfacing abrasion resistant finish on the outer shell layer fabric that we use for this expedition hat. Although the outer shell fabric is hardfaced, it does have a soft feel to the hand and it does help to reduce the amount of blowing snow that could stick to it.

The built-in rear neck flap is especially designed for users that are not always keen on pulling on a neck gaiter when out in the extremes, or prefer not to use one until the temperatures are well below zero.  The rear flap is there to minimize the blowing wind to the back of the neck and to keep the snow or rain off that area as well.  You can leave the flap out over the collar or you can tuck it in to further seal out the cold elements.  The rear flap also has a small highly reflective strip that will allow you to be seen when a light is flashed at you from behind.

We've also built in a external rear hook & loop strap system that allows you to firmly secure or anchor you goggle or headlight straps to the back of the hat.  On the inside front of the XWick hat, we've sewn in what we call a "Turbo Flap", that has been added for use by the user when additional warmth and windblocking is required on the forehead, while also further sealing out the pounding head wind as well.  Flip it up when not needed, or down when you need a little "turbo boost" of warmth to the forehead area.

The configuration of the three technical fabrics that we use for this item, the orientation and cut along with their individual stretch capacity allows us to offer this item as a One Size Fits Most.

Dimensions Laying Flat:
- 9" - 228.6mm top of hat to bottom edge of main hat tall
- 15" - 381mm Total length of the hat from top to bottom edge of the rear neck flap.

Roughneck HHL 2.5 Hat

We designed and built the new Roughneck HHL 2.5 Hat to serve two primary purposes.  First to address the demands of everyday user's that wanted a 2 side flapped hat that would actually cut the winds and keep them warm and secondly to satisfy the needs of our base of outdoor workers who earn their paychecks working out in the elements during the cool and cold weather months of the year.  They told us we need a hat that will work in conjunction with our required Hard Hats and it needs to be built to work in keeping our heads warm, especially on those sub-zero face biting days during the heart of the Winter.

We designed and built this hat as usual, using a technical fabric laying system to ensure that the users will stay warmer - longer then anything else that they can get their hands on from other sources.  In this case, we selected to use approximately 2.5(two and a half) technical layers of fabric in total, to insure that the final product does what it is suppose to do, which is to keep the user warmer-longer then anything else similar that exists.

The Outer Hardfaced Shell layer provides excellent abrasion resistance, offers 95% plus in terms of thermal windblocking protection, offers very good moisture vapor breathability and is also DWR water repellent treated for shedding the moisture of snow, sleet or rain.  The 0.50 layer internal insert is placed at the top crown and sloping crown area of the hat and it provides excellent insulating warmth and heat reflection, while also allowing vapor moisture to pass through it.  The Inner most layer that surrounds the head, ears, face and chin is made from a heavyweight rated synthetic polyester that provides excellent overall warmth to the entire configuration of the hat.

We designed and cut the patterns for this hat to ensure that the back of the neck had above average protection from the elements, that the forehead area had adequate coverage, but not too much to push down over the eyes and so that the flaps when secured together would seal the heat in around the head and ears while also keeping the chin warm along the way.  The nice thing about this hat as well, is that you can regulate any heat build up by just separating the 2 flaps from each other and then just let them hang down.  We also sewed in heavy duty 1 inch wide hook & loop material for excellent sealing of the 2 flaps together, stitched the top seams on the hat together with heavy weight 69lb bonded nylon thread and the remaining seams are double stitched with high quality polyester thread to ensure a top of the line stitching job.

The SIZING on this hat is One Size Fits Most, however the best fit is going to be for Medium, Large & XL sized heads, measuring in circumference from 22.50" to 24.50".  This hat does have fairly good stretch, so in terms of USA hat sizes, it should accommodate people that wear hat sizes 7 1/8 to about size 7 7/8 on the high end.  As always heads on or below the low end of the scale may find the hat a little loose and on the larger head size end of the scale the hat may fit a little snugger.

This hat can be easily worn in the following temperature ranges:  +40F(+4C) to -40F(-40C)

As part of our additional expansion to our Prairie Series of Gear, we have designed and configured a new straight neck gator that presents some of the elements and assets of our Arctic Series Windblocking Thermal Neck Gator's, but tones down the thermal warmth or heat that it generates because not every area of the Country demands it.

At the same, people are sick and tired of buying poorly configured single layer straight neck gators that always end up leaving them with a gagingly wet face from their breath, which inturn freezes up and sags down on their face over time.

What we have developed as a solution to the comments we heard last Winter, is what has evolved into our new Prairie Snowstorm Windblocking Neck Gator.  Again to prevent the gaggingly wet moisture build up and freezing on the outside of the gator, we build ours with 2 layers of technical fabric instead of just one.  Our outer layer in made from a 100% thermal windblocking, breathable and DWR water repellent synthetic polyester fabric, while the inner layer provides a mid-range of thermal warmth.  The combination again produces a great gear item that will not allow moisture to build up on the outside layer of the gator and will always keep your face warm and dry.  This neck gator will never freeze up like the other gator's you currently own and it always allows you to breath in warm air when it is pulled up and over your nose.

We sized our Prairie Series gator slightly larger then the average sizing for the run of the mill neck gator that we have all owned in the past and have designed it to be a "One Size Fits Most" configuration.  The verticle up and down length is shorter then our Arctic Series of straight neck gators and we also don't incorporate the "stay in any face position" pull tight shock cording on the top edge as the Arctic Series also have.

What you get when you purchase one of our Prairie Snowstorm Windblocking Neck Gators, is another unique piece of Winter Gear that will satisfy the requirements and demands of just about any Winter condition that Mother Nature bares upon us during the Winter months and you "won't" find anything else like it!

We perfer to spell our neck gaiters as "gators", because like our preferred spelling, our neck gators are built differently from the other 99% in the market.

Our Gator's are built with a 2 Layer System, the first is a 100% thermal windblocking & DWR water repellent breathable outer shell, that almost totally eliminates the build up of moisture that usually collects from your breath on the outside of the material when it's pulled up over your nose.  Gone are the damp "frosty face" days and you will always be breathing in warm air instead of cold lung burning air, when the gator is pulled up over your nose.  No more "frozen" neck gator ever and the ability to always breath warm air, priceless!

The second layer on the inside is built from a very warm heavy weight technical fleece, that will keep you warm and dry beyond anything that you've had in the past.  The techical fabric combination has helped to keep our Field Testers warm & dry in temperatures in excess of -50 F (-45.5C)below zero.

On the top edge of our Neck Gator's, we have incorporated a top side shock cord w/cord loc that allows you the ability to secure the gator in any position on your face and have it stay where you want it to stay.

The Small/Medium size is ideal for most women to wear.

We use only the highest quality USA manufactured synthetic polyester materials that meets U.S. Military specifications in our construction processes.  Our straight Windblocking Arctic Thermal Neck Gator's also contain 50% "Earth friendly green" technical fabric material that is made from re-cycled plastic bottles, which is then processed into the finest synthetic polyester fabric in the World.

The XWick Hat - XWick Straight Neck Gaiter on a misty damp, windy cold morning heading down to Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington, New Hampshire

I guess you could call it innovation by design, as we have continued to push the limits in what can be done with selected Cold Weather Gear & Accessories.  In this case, we have further revolutionized the straight neck gaiter with our Expediton Series XWick 3.4 TRH Windblocking Thermal Wicking Straight Neck Gaiter, which is yet again in a class by itself.

The Expedition Series XWick 3.4 TRH straight neck gaiter has been developed for the user that participates in extreme cold weather activities under high exertion circumstances.

We already offer a range of straight and drop pad neck gaiters that do an excellent job in keeping you warm and prevent you from having a frozen "mush" face, but high exertion extreme cold weather adventures require that extra kick in the thermal moisture wicking department and we did just that with the Expedition Series XWick 3.4 TRH straight neck gaiter.

XWick 3.4 TRH is designed for the user that is under physical exertion better then 70% of the time in face biting cold temperatures, where you need to stay warm and protected from frostbite, but you also need better moisture transfer from the area around your mouth.  The following is the secert to the XWick 3.4 TRH:

  • This Neck Gaiter is built with 3 technical fabric layers.  Layer 1 the Outer Shell, is a soft to the hand feeling Hardfaced thermal windblocking, breathable and DWR water repellent fabric.  This fabric is resistant to picking from brush and has a pretty good abrasion resistance as well.

The configuration of the three technical fabrics that we use for this item, the orientation and cut along with their individual stretch capacity allows us to offer this item as a One Size Fits Most.  We also incorporate a top edge internal shock cord and cord-loc for securing the unit to any location on your face, while also sealing the heat in around the neck and face.

We're not quite sure, but we think that an Iditarod Musher would surrender his wallet before he would give up the Windblocking Thermal Drop Pad Neck Gator that is around his neck?  Why, because they not only block the wind out, but  they are also designed to keep the upper chest core warm as well and with a drop pad in both the front and in the back, they are reversible and can be spun around.  These Neck Gators also prevent moisture from building up anywhere on the outside of the gator and also allow you to always breath in warm air when it is pulled up over the face.  Gone are the damp "frosty face" days and you will always be breathing in warm air instead of cold lung burning air, when the gator is pulled up over your nose.  No more "frozen" neck gator ever and the ability to always breath warm air, priceless!

Our Drop Pad Gator's not only block out 100% of the piercing wind with its outer shell layer, but they are also DWR water resistant & breathable for keeping you warmer and drier then anything else in their class.  Our exclusive design uses a 2-3 Layer system of technical fabric and materials, with the inner layer that surrounds the face and body being made from a heavy weight technical fleece and in the center of the drop pads we have added some additional insulation for superior warmth.  The R-value of insulation alone that you get in the upper crest area from the drop pads is R-4.65.

The top edge shock cord w/cord loc also allows you to seal out the convective cold air flow, while also being able to maintain the position of the top edge anywhere on your face that you desire it to be positioned.

The Medium/Large/XL size is ideal for men and for women who want a little more freedom room around their neck and face area.

We use only the highest quality USA manufactured synthetic polyester that meets U.S. Military specifications and other USA made insulation materials in our construction processes.

We weren't quite sure how to position this  item within our product range, since the overall average insulation range on this item is similar to our Arctic Series Windblocking Thermal Drop Pad Neck Gaiter, part number SKU#20070306PGLXL (shown below) however the distribution of the insulating value has been shifted around on this item.

The Cross Hybrid Drop Pad Neck Gaiter is built with a similar base 2/3 layer fabric system as its "grand daddy" below, however the inner layer of this gaiter is supplied from a lesser gram weight synthetic polyester technical fabric, which we estimate reduces it's insulation value on the upper half of the neck gaiter by about 8 to 10%.  The outer shell layer is made from the same 100% thermal windblocking, DWR water resistant and breathable technical fabric and the inner core of the drop pads contain the same special insulating material inserts.

The drop pads that protect and keep your upper body core area warm, are now even a little warmer because of the addition of the thermal outside and inside pockets that we have added to each one of the drop pads.  Use your imagination in terms of what you want to fill and use the pockets for on your next expedition, distance sled dog training run or race, or even for that next mountain climb to the summit?

If you own one of our regular Arctic Series Drop Pad Neck Gaiters, a Technical Advantage Exclusive, or whether you're contemplating the purchase of your first one, the one thing that you will notice is that there is again nothing out there in the Global marketplace that is going to keep you as warm as either this Cross Hybrid or our Arctic Series Drop Pad Neck Gaiters.

The Cross Hybrid Drop Pad Neck Gaiter also allows you to always breathe in warm air when it is pull up and over the nose and it will never freeze up from your breath moisture.  We also have built into the top edge of the gaiter the same pull tight adjustable shock cording and cord loc so that you can secure the gaiter to any position on your face.  We have also referenced that this item is totally applicable to MEDIUM users as well and if the gaiter seems to be a little big around the face, head and neck, then tighted the shock cording as much as is needed and seal that heat back in where it belongs!

We use only the highest quality USA manufactured synthetic polyester that meets U.S. Military specifications and other USA made insulation materials in our construction processes.  The major overall content of technical fabric used in the contruction of this item is 99% synthetic polyester.

The Cross Hybrid Drop Pad Gaiter is the next generation in our exclusive design process on this item and you "will not" find this configuration "anywhere else" but here at Technical Advantage Gear.  We don't sell the most gear in the World, but we do sell the best and the warmest.

Welcome to the next generation in ultimate Winter Gear!

(Rear View)

We've stretched the design and innovation limits with our latest entry of neck gaiter designs.  In this case, we have further revolutionized the drop pad neck gaiter with our Expediton Series XWick 3.4 TRH Expedition 1.4 Windblocking Thermal Wicking Drop Pad Neck Gaiter, which is yet again in a class by itself.

The Expedition Series XWick 3.4 TRH drop pad neck gaiter has been developed for the user that participates in extreme cold weather activities under high exertion circumstances.

Further, perhaps your expedition fancy is skiing across the North Pole or trekking across Antarctica, or perhaps something less extreme like high altitude snow shoeing in virgin mountain powder.  In any or all of these examples you are exerting your body and producing sweat moisture while trying to balance your body heat and minimize the build up of perspiration or breath mositure that with the wrong gear will freeze up at some point.

We already offer a range of straight and drop pad neck gaiters that do an excellent job in keeping you warm and prevent you from having a frozen "mush" face, but high exertion extreme cold weather adventures require that extra kick in the thermal moisture wicking department and we did just that with the Expedition Series XWick 3.4 TRH Expedition 1.4 drop pad neck gaiter.

XWick 3.4 TRH Expedition 1.4 is designed for the user that is under physical exertion better then 70% of the time in face biting cold temperatures, where you need to stay warm and protected from frostbite, but you also need better moisture transfer from the area around your mouth.  The following is the secert to the XWick 3.4 TRH Expedition 1.4:

  • This Neck Gaiter is built with 3 technical fabric layers.  Layer 1 the Outer Shell, is a soft to the hand feeling Hardfaced thermal windblocking, breathable and DWR water repellent fabric.  This fabric is resistant to picking from brush and has a pretty good abrasion resistance as well.

The final alpha component of H again stands for the Hardfacing abrasion resistant finish on the outer shell layer fabric that we use for this neck gaiter. Although the outer shell fabric is hardfaced, it does have a soft feel to the hand and it does help to reduce the amount of blowing snow that could stick to it.  The Expedition is the rating that we have given to this item based on how it regulates the heat, transfers moisture and protects the user from the extreme elements while under physical exertion.  Finally, the 1.4 is the Drop Pad configuration on this gear unit, which is (1) one full drop pad in the front and an approximate 40% length drop pad in the rear.

Dimensions Laying Flat:

The Technical Advantage Gear lightweight mittens were designed for those of you who experience terminally cold fingers, most of the year, as caused by:

  • Diabetes
  • Severe Frostbite or Black Finger, Freezing Burns & major Heat Burns that have left the skins surface damaged & sensitive to the cool or cold air and sometimes over sensitive to heat
  • Heart Disease or other factors leading up to Heart Disease, such as high blood pressure & high cholesterol
  • Hereditary Blood Circulation issues
  • Other Medical Conditions, prescription side effects, final removal of surgical bandages & wrist or arm casts, leaving the skin area extremely sensitive to cold air until the new skin fully develops and acclimates back to normal for that person
  • Raynauds Disease(some also spell it Reynauds), that affects the flow of blood to the limbs, causes severe pain and/or dis-coloring to the color of the skin, with magnified sensitivity to the cold air
  • Self inflicted issues such as Smoking that impairs circulation, as does high Caffeine intake that constricts the veins
  • Senior Citizens & the Aging Process causing thinning of the skin
  • Stroke

Don't let the cool, damp and windy days outside of Winter stop your outdoor activities as Technical Advantage Gear can keep you protected and confortable - Here pictured on the Summit of Mt Washington is one of our gear junkies using our BB Cap Ear Flaps and a pair of the Thermal Windblocking Abrasion Resistant Wicking Lightweight Mitts/Liner Mitts - OUR GEAR HAS A REASON FOR ALL SEASONS....

We're introducing Lightweight Mitts/Liner Mitts to our product range, primarily for our existing and new customer base of people who suffer from afflictions that affect & impact their blood circulatory systems, causing restricted blood flow resultings in always cold fingers and/or skin that is severely sensitive and painful to cool and cold weather temperatures.  We did not develop these lightweight/liner mitts for people who have normal blood circulation, as an attempt to sell you an "add-on" to our regular mitten product range, as you do not need them because we construct our mittens correctly from the start.

These mitten units are for those of you who are impacted from Diabetes, Raynauds, Hereditary issues, Heart Disease, Aging and the like, whereby it is best that your hands are always protected and covered from the Fall/Winter/Spring elements, once your hand is outside of your regular mitten.  These units are designed to be used as either a Lightweight independent mitten unit for the late Fall - early Spring temperature seasons, or as a Liner Mitten to be used in conjunction with a regular mitten during the dead cold of Winter.

What we did, which most other companies don't do with their liners, is that we built ours to be thermal windblocking on the outside layer and then added an inner layer that has superior excellence in thermal moisture wicking and transfer, resulting in very action packed 2 Layer technical fabric system.  On top of that, these units can perform very well in cooler weather temperatures because they have great dextarity and the outer shells have excellent abrasion resistance and are also DWR water repellent treated for repelling rain or snow moisture when used as an independent lightweight mitten.

These units have adequate stretch capacity for length and width adjustment, for those having hands that don't fit perfectly into our sizing dimension charts, therefore "always" order that smaller size instead of the next size up for the best fit.  We also gave these units good overall length, which means that they should easily ride up at least 40% to 50% of the length of your forearm, providing excellent wrist protection as well.

The 2 Layer system that these mittens are built with, although lightweight in feel, still produce a thermal insulation R-value of R2.8, which is tremendous when you know that they only consist of 2 layers of technical fabric.  As an independent mitten these units would also be great for those late Fall - late Winter - early Spring days when your running errands and are in and out of the car/truck, would be great for cyclist and even for people and/or seniors sitting inside of the house with terminally cold fingers.

These units should help in providing a better regulation of temperature around the hands and fingers, keeping them comforatable and "not sweatie hot" and if the hands/fingers do sweat like they occassionally do when first inside of gloves/mittens, these will do a great job in wicking the moisture away!

As a separate lightweight mitten, these are designed to be used in temperatures above +32F - 0C and are not sold as a replacement for regular fully insulated Winter Mittens.

Thermal Windblocking Wrist Warmers

Petite Small Hand Above - LRG Hand Bottom

Petite Hand Above w/Wrist Warmer

Petite Hand Above Inside G2 Mitten

LRG Hand Above w/Wrist Warmer

LRG Hand Above Inside G2 Mitten

We've added the Thermal Windblocking Wrist Warmers for people who want or desire a little more thermal warmth and windblocking protection on the lower to mid-wrist area that comes out from the mitten or glove.

The Wrist Warmers can be used in combination with any of our range of Technical Advantage Gear Mittens as well as with most other brands of mittens or gloves, when extra skin coverage is desired.  The Wrist Warmers provide partial skin protection to the lower palm area that sits inside of the mitten or glove and then rides part way up the forearm toward the elbow.  All toll, the Wrist Warmers provide a total length coverage of 8.25" or 210mm.

The Wrist Warmers are built from a one layer fabric design, with the one layer providing "100% thermal windblocking protection" for added warmth and for cutting the impact from the blowing winds.  At the same time, the asset value of the technical fabric also offers breathablity and DWR water repellency for sheding the moisture.

The Wrist Warmers are made & sold as a "One Sized" application design and should fit most hands that range from Womens & Juniors, on up through Medium and most Large sized hands.  We show some pictures to the left of a small petite size hand wearing a Wrist Warmer as a point of reference, along with a chubby medium to large size hand as another point of pictured reference for you to view.

On smaller petite hands the fit may be slightly looser and on larger hands the Wrist Warmers will have a more secure fit.  Irregardless of the actual fit on your hand, they will never slide down when you put them inside of your mitten or glove due to the "thumb loop" that fits over the crotch of the thumb when you put them on each hand.

When you pull the Wrist Warmers onto your hands, don't be afraid of how your hand fits thru the opening on to the end, as the fabric provides side to side stretch and the "seams" are all sewn with "69LB bonded nylon thread" for maximum seam strength.  For a tigher fit on smaller forearms, you can always pull the Wrist Warmer over your shirt sleeve, before putting your jacket on and before sliding your hand with Wrist Warmer into your mitten.

The second generation ("G2")of our Prairie Snowstorm Mitts builds on the great successes that we had with the original version release and with some well defined re-engineering now sets a new standard in the global market place for cold weather mittens and it's now available for smaller hands in our size of X-Small.

The G2 Prairie Snowstorm Mitts are built with technically advanced abrasion resistant thermal windblocking, DWR water repellent, breathable outer shells - a modified 5 layer top & bottom total layering system that also provides a further enhancement for conductive heat loss, about another 8% to 10% additional benefit - an approximate 10% enhancement to the bend flexibility and an increase of approximately 14% to the total length of the mitt allowing it to ride higher up your jacket sleeve.  You also can seal the cold air out at the wrist area with the "pull tight" shock cording and securing cord loc.

The overall thermal R-value for insulation rating on the G2 mitts is an approximate R-6.55 which is down ever so slightly from the original Prairie Mitts we introduced a couple of years ago.   However, we feel the further enhancement made through a technical material change to one of the internal layers, for even better conductive heat loss protection still provides an exceptional overall warmth package for the end user and we've yet to find a competitive mitt at any price point that comes even close to our standards.

For smaller women's hand sizes, we trimmed down the overall length and width on these mitts, both in the main mitten area, as well as with the thumbs.  The thumb unit has been shortened and narrowed vs the size small G2's, for a closer & better fit for women's petite hands.  The X-Small G2's offer all of the same asset values as our other sizes in this series, however they are just a little more compact in design for those smaller hands.

The G2's on Mt Washington, New Hampshire heading down to Tuckerman Ravine

The second generation ("G2")of our Prairie Snowstorm Mitts builds on the great successes that we had with the original version release and with some well defined re-engineering now sets a new standard in the global market place for cold weather mittens.

The "New" G2 Prairie Snowstorm Mitts are built with technically advanced abrasion resistant thermal windblocking, DWR water repellent, breathable outer shells - a modified 5 layer top & bottom total layering system that also provides a further enhancement for conductive heat loss, about another 8% to 10% additional benefit - an approximate 10% enhancement to the bend flexibility and an increase of approximately 14% to the total length of the mitt allowing it to ride higher up your jacket sleeve.  You also can seal the cold air out at the wrist area with the "pull tight" shock cording and securing cord loc.  Of course you also gain some extra length in the fingertips and length of the thumb, which further accomodates more uses with different finger & thumb lengths.

One thing that remains the same with our new G2 Mitts, is the global benchmark standard that we've  set and have maintained with our inner most layer that surrounds the hand, that still provides superior excellence in thermal moisture wicking & transfer.  You "will not" find a competitive brand that even comes close to what these or any other Technical Advantage Gear Mitt has to offer in this area as well.

Therefore, those of you who have terminally cold fingers that sweat initially when inside of someone else mitts and then the moisture build up excellerating the cooling process, or perhaps you are a diabetic or have reynauds disease, these are going to be your best hope for an extended period of warmth when you're being active outdoors in the Winter time.  These mitts are the total package and "are built" with the assets required for extending your period of enjoyment out in the cold air and will save you many dollars, euro's, pounds, etc., for the price that they are offered at, versus thinking that if you spend more money that you are going to get a better mitten from someone else!

You also will not find another brand of mittens that are built with the two outer most layers that both provide "thermal windblocking protection" and "DWR water repellancy".  Brands built with nylon outer shells block some of the effects of the wind, but they provide "zero" themal warmth value to the overall mitt.  Most nylon shells "are" DWR treated to repell the moisture, however through extended use in wet conditions the benefit of the DWR treatment breaks down and moisture enters the mitts from the outside, but NOT WITH OURS as the next layer inside as we mentioned is also DWR water repellant treated and of course thermal windblocking.

As mentioned at the top of this section, we also coverted the outer shell layer material to one that offers excellent abrasion resistance with its hardfaced finish, which still has a soft to the touch feel to it.  We never had a wear problem with the original shell material that we used, rather we decided to enhance the total asset value that the G2 mitten has to offer by incorporating this new technical fabric.  We also continue to be proud to say that all of the technical fabrics and insulating materials that we build these mittens with are 100% made in the USA and of course we 100% make these mittens here in Wisconsin - USA.

Anyway, the Second Generation of our Prairie Snowstorm Mitts will again offer YOU, yes YOU the best asset value for the price that you pay for them.  So try them...we know that you'll love them!

Did You Know...

Did you know what the layering system inside of our "new" G2 mitts looks like?

Like our original Prairie Snowstorm Mitts, the second generation G2 Hardfaced Mitts offer 5 layers of technical insulating materials on the Top side and 5 layers on the Bottom side, providing the best overall protection for minimizing the effects of conductive & convective heat loss as compared to other brands of mittens and they pack an second to no one thermal insulation value of R-6.55 on both the top and on the bottom side of the mitts, wow!

Ever wonder what the inside of  your current mitts might look like?

Well now you do and you can see for yourself....like foam rubber for making them look puffy, plastic to seal the sweat moisture in so your hands get wet & colder faster, minimal actual insulation material throughout & a bottom side of the mittt under the palm that is only about 20% as thick as the top.

Ever wonder why most brands of mittens don't keep your hands & fingers warm, other then when you're inside the store trying them on?

Did You Know...

Did you know that the human hand contains approximately 200 sweat gland ducts per square centimeter on the top side of the hand & approximately 370 sweat gland ducts per square centimeter on the bottom side of the palm of the hand?

So if the botom side of the hand has twice as many sweat gland ducts as the top of the hand for dissipating heat and sweat moisture, then why are most other brands of mitts built two, three or four time thicker on the top side of their mitts then on the bottom side?

Technical Advantage Gear "correctly" & "adequately" equalizes the amount of technical insulating  material for both the top & bottom sides of each mitt that we build!

SIZING FOR PRAIRE SNOWSTORM MITTS ONLY

To determine the correct mitt size, you will need to measure the length of your hand from the bottom "full crease" line at the base of your hand to the tip of your "middle" finger.  Next you need to measure the width of your hand at the points illustrated above.

Once you have your bare handed length & width dimensions of your hand, then go to the chart below which highlights the "MAXIMUM" hand dimension for each mitt size.  If you want to use the mitts in conjunction with a lightweight pair of gloves so that you hand is always protected from the cold when you need the dextarity of using your fingers outside of the mitt, then take the same measurement with your glove on and then determine your size.

Mitt Size

Max. HandWidth

Max. Hand Length
SMALL 4 5/8" - 117.5mm 7 1/2" - 190.5mm

MEDIUM

5 1/4" - 133.4mm 8.0" - 203.2mm
LARGE 5 3/4" - 146mm 8 1/4" - 209.6mm

Sometimes innovation comes in the way of designing and exclusively "new" product that nobody else in the World has, like our Drop Pad Neck Gaiters.

Other times innovation comes in the way of doing or adding something "new" to an existing product that nobody else does in order to be able to expand your product and customer application base and that's exactly what we did, yet once again.

You already know that we offer the highest insulation values in "all" of the various Winter Mittens that we manufacture.  You also know that we "generously" size all of our Mittens to accommodate and to allow proper hand sizing and to also facilitate the use of protective gloves on your hands that will easily insert in and out or our Prairie Series and Extreme Element Series Mitts, which is something that most others don't.  Yes and we also build all of our Winter Mitts correctly by beefing up and equalizing the amount of technical insulating fabric material on both the top and bottom sides of our mitts, so that they will keep you warmer - longer!

So now besides getting a mitt that offers an R-7.15 of Thermal Insulating Value, that are also 100% thermal wind blocking, breathable, DWR water resistant on the outer shell and offer superior thermal moisture wicking around the hand and fingers, we now offer the opportuninty to expand your usage horizons as well.  So....why not stop carrying them around with you, dropping them in the snow or worrying about where you left them and instead why not lock them onto your handlebars or ski pole grips?

Our Prairie Snowstorm Mitts with Handlebar Straps, {the straps do "completely" detach from the mitts when not needed}, are built with the addition of a wide patch of heavy duty soft "loop" velcro type material sewn onto the thumb and top side of the mitts.  We have also slightly increased the amount of gripping material as well. The (2)two removable locking straps have heavy duty "hook" material sewn onto a (1)one inch wide nylon material base strap.  The strap configuaration allows the operator the flexiblity to lock the mitts firmly or less firmly to what ever you're planning to mount them to.  PLEASE REMEMBER, THE LOCKING STRAPS ARE "ONLY" MADE TO KEEP THE MITTS SECURED TO A CERTAIN OBJECT AND "NOT" THE USER OPERATOR!

The Handlebar Straps can be adjusted easily so that you can apply then around and use them in conjunction with vehicle brake levers and press throttles and then when you take a rest from snowmobiling, ATV'ing or even riding your mountain bike in the Winter, the mitts will stay right there on the handlebars....imagine that?

For those of you that are into sled dogs, be it Sprint Racing or Distance training, these are the mitts for you.  They can always be locked to your sled handlebars and all you have to do is to slide your hands in and out as needed.  Sprint mushers, finally something to put you gloved fingers into that will actually keep them from freezing.  Yes we already know and have seen the handlebar glove bags that are being made and well, it's no wonder your fingers are always frozen, so why not put them into a warm pair of mitts instead ones that really work?

We use only the highest quality USA manufactured synthetic polyester that meets U.S. Military specifications and other USA made insulation materials in our construction processes.  These mitts also contain 20% "Earth friendly green" technical fabric material that is made from re-cycled plastic bottles, which is then processed into the finest synthetic polyester fabric in the World.

Did You Know...

There are a hundred and one reasons why some of us walk around with cold feet & cold hands and that's not just in the Winter time either.

For cold hands in the late Fall & Winter season, Technical Advantage offers you the finest mitts in the World for keeping your hands warmer & drier then anything thing else that we've ever laid our eyes  and we also offer you different configurations for handling many different endeavors as well.

As with cold hands, cold feet issues affect better then 60% of the population, with some of the major causes being hereditary, disease or age.  There are many different alternative solutions that are available such as mineral supplements, vitamins and others, however we haven't found anything that's tried and true that works for some of us here.

Further...since we don't make boots, liners or socks, we can't offer you a solution for purchase that may work for you.

But what we can offer you is a couple "free" suggestions" that help some of us out here, that have twelve month a year cold feet.

Suggestion 1:

Eliminate or at least minimize the amount of "caffine" that you use everyday.  Big culprits are regular coffee, many types of soda & of course chocolate.  The issue with caffine is that it constricts the blood vessels and further reduces the amount of blood that can be pumped by the heart to the extremities (i.e. your hands & feets)  Smoking also impairs circulation.

Suggestion 2:

With poor blood circulation also comes sweaty feet once we put our socks, shoes or boots on, which eventually get cold due to the "cooling effect" caused by the sweat moisture.  We haven't found the perfect pair of socks for keeping feet warm and dry, so the best solution that we've found is to use or place a very generous amount of FOOT POWDER on your feet and in between the toes especially, as the foot powder will help to dry up the foot/toe sweat for an extended period of time.  It's not the "perfect" solution, but it works for some of us and our suggestion worked out great for a diabetic musher friend of ours who tried it out in the 2007 Iditarod in wind chilled temperatures in excess of -100F below zero.  So try it...it might work for you and it's cheap to do!

We like to use terminology throughout our website for explaining the forces of nature that impact why different parts of our bodies get cold and at the same time we also, generally explain what we have done to combat the described or termed force of nature.

But the real question here is whether you remember or understand what they they are and why it is important to know what they mean?  We continue to believe that informed shoppers make better choices, so listed below are a few terms & definitions for making you a wiser person:

Conduction or Conductive Heat Loss:

....is the transfer of heat from one object to another, when the two objects are touching or in contact with each other......Picture going outside in the Winter time and picking up a frozen steel pipe with your mitts on your hands, the warmer object your hands w/mitts (or heat) is gripping the colder object (the frozen steel pipe) which is inturn transferring the heat away from your hand & mitts.

Why is this important?  It's important because your hand dissipates twice as much heat and sweat moisture on the bottom side of the hand versus the top side of the hand.  Therefore, when you're wearing most other brands of Winter mittens that are built with the bottom side only 20% to 30 % as thick as the top side, the cold or frozen object in your grip is transferring or stealing away the critical heat from your hand(s).

Extreme Element Arctic Thermal Mitts w/detachable Thumb Loc Straps

This is the number one choice and size for most female Sled Dog Mushers!

We designed and cut the patterns for these mitts with our wonderful female customers in mind.  Now it's not to say that if your hand fits the sizing template guy's that you can't buy a pair, you certainly are invited to do so, as these are specially made for smaller adult hands.

We've had a tendancy to put out first run designs for the potential masses of male customers, however our ever increasing base of female adventurers, explorers and sled dog mushers keep telling us 'hey, what about us...we need to stay warm just as much as they do"?

It took us awhile to figure our exactly what we wanted to do for our female customer base that was wanting some of the assets that our other two sizes of Extreme Element Arctic Thermal Mitts have to offer, but don't necessarily want or need everything that's on them.  We also know, OK  learned that they also need a little better gripping flexibility, a.k.a. "the death grip"capability when some of them are out on their dog sleds.  At the same time, we're told that they have to be just as warm as the other larger sized Extreme Element Mitts so that their fingers stay as warm as possible.

The design and structural framework for the Medium mitts is similar to the standard Extreme Element Mitts, but yet not the same.  In a nut shell so to speak, this is what we did:

  1. We eliminated one layer of technical fabric from the top and bottom sides of the mitt, so now there is 6 top/6 bottom instead of 7 top and bottom each.
  2. The thermal insulating value on these mitts top & bottom is R-9.3 instead of R-10.5, which is a slight but not a significant change.
  3. We changed the outer shell fabric to a Hardfaced windblocking thermal fabric, which should further reduce snow from sticking to the mitts and also provide some additional abrasion resistance.
  4. We stripped off the wrist securing webbing strap and replaced it with a pull tight inner shock cord and external cord-loc.
  5. We eliminated the shock cording and cord-loc at the hand opening area or end of the mitt.
  6. We added a narrow strip of highly reflective elastic tape to the front or top side of each mitt.
  7. We sewed on loop velcro to the thumb and top/front area of each mitt and are providing completely detachable straps that can be used for thumb or mitt locking to handlebars or what ever you require.  Use them or don't use them, that's up to you to decide, however you can enjoy the opportunity to have a thumb-loc option or not.

The configuration of the medium mitt still allows for a Thermal Windblocking, DWR water repellent and breathable outer shell, exceptional upper and lower equalized thermal insulating warmth, great thermal moisture wicking around the hand, while also providing slightly better gripping flexibility.

The other benefit that you receive with all of the noted structural changes to this Medium Extreme Element Hardfaced  Series mitt, is a slightly better purchase price to you!

Convection or Convective Heat Loss:

...the loss of heat by Convection is caused or occurs in response to the movement of a fluid or gas...The basic natures element that contributes to convective heat loss is the wind.  An example could be the draft of cold air that goes down your neck collar when you go outside, because your jacket is not zipped up.  Another example could be the cold air of the wind that penetrates the nylon outer shell of your current "status quo" designed mittens that are not made from a wind blocking formulation.  The cold air penetrates directly into the insulation layer of these mittens, which then causes your fingers to become colder much faster.  Or a third example is the wind or cold air that enters into the hand compartment of your mitts through the hand opening area, because they do not have a wrist webbing strap or pull tight shock cord w/cord loc that is available for sealing the heat in and the cold air or wind out.

The XWick 3.6 TRH Glove Over Mitt Shells were built for serious expeditioners who continue to demand gear that actually works & performs to a higher standard, but no other gear manufacturer is providing!

The Technical Advantage Gear Glove Over Mitt Shells also COMPLETELY seal shut at the top opening end when not in use, so that the snow and/or rain stays out.  They also come with multi-purpose heavy duty webbing straps at the top for gripping to open up the top seal, but more importantly one strap on each mitt has a durable plastic buckle so that they can be clipped together around your waist belt so that they are not dangling down at your knees.

The design and engineering of Glove Over Mitt Shells provides for a 3 Layer total technical fabric system. 3 on top and 3 on bottom, that is designed to provide thermal wind blocking protection, abrasion resistance, breathability, water repellency, inner layer moisture wicking, moderate additional warmth when pulled over the users gloves and a good level of bend flexibility and hand gripping when being worn.  The Glove Over Mitt units also provide an approximate thermal R-value of insulation of R-3.6 for both top and bottom sides of the shells.

We designed these units for the serious expedition mountain climbers in the World, who generally use gloves as long as they can on the way up to the summit and as temperatures drop and the chilling winds drive the temperatures much colder, they demand an extension gear item that will allow them  the ability to still use their gloves for dextarity purposes while providing needed additional insulation and wind blocking protection.  With that in mind, the first units that we made of this item are already climbing in the Himalaya's during the start of the 2009 climbing season.

We built our units with 3 layers top & 3 on the bottom, as compared to most other glove over mitt shells that only provide one or two layers of material total.  Other brands may provide additional wind blocking protection and water repellency with their shells, but they fail miserably in most other area's.

Other brands or types of glove over mitt shells fail in several areas.  First off if they come with a nylon outer shell material, you get "zero" in the way of any additional thermal insulating value and the nylon material may block out some of the wind, but it does little to stop the forces of convective heat loss.  Second, other glove over mitt shells provide little in the way of additional insulating  and moisture wicking materials and their breathability is generally restricted due to the nylon outer shell fabrics used, therefore the moisture stays trapped inside.

Ever observe mountain climbing pictures where the glove over mitts are dangling down at the climbers knees, all the time OPEN at the hand opening area with all of the snow and moisture going directly inside of the units, well not a good system if you want them to be dry on the inside when you first start to use them?  You'll notice from the pictures that we provide in the left hand column, that our Technical Advantage XWick Glove Over Mitt Shells will seal completely shut across the hand entry opening area when not in use with their built in hook & loop sealing system and when in use you can also press the seal shut on both sides of your forearm as well, besides pulling the wrist area shock cord and cord loc tight to keep the convective air flow out of the inner compartment.  We also again provide a webbing strap buckle assembly that allows you the opportunity to clip these to your waist belt or backpack to keep the shells from dangling at the knees.  We finish off the outer shell assembly with a nice length of highly visable reflective elastic, so at night other climbers or people can find you easier with a flash of the light.

We built these units with serious mountain climbing expeditions in mind, however these will easily extend the warmth period for anyone else who doesn't already own a pair of our Technical Advantage Mitts, whereby the Glove Over Mitt Shells wouldn't be required.  These would also be a great solution fix for mushers who like to keep their especially thick gloves on their hands as long as they can, or for those who want to extend the warmth period of the mitts that they already own, but unfortunately bought from somebody else and the warmth performance is very poor.  The skies the limit in terms of activities that you could use these exceptional Glove Over Mitt Shell units.

The critical dimensions on the Glove Over Mitt Shells are as follows:

Overall Outer Length - 14 1/2" (369.3mm)

Overall Inner Length - 13 1/2" (342.9mm)

Hand Opening Area ID - 10.0" (254mm)

Mid Hand OD Width Flat - 7.0" (177.8mm)

Mid Hand ID Width Flat - 6.0" (152.4mm)

Thumb Length ID (base of thumb crotch to inside tip) - 3.5" (88.9mm)

Inner Distance from crotch or base of the thumb past the fingertips - 9.0" (228.6mm)

No actual temperature performance rating on these units is being provided, as they are not meant to be worn with bare hands, therefore what you are wearing in conjunction with these units will determine the actual extreme temperature ranges that these will be acceptable to use in.

Our Extreme Element Arctic Thermal Mitts have been designed and tested to handle the toughest outdoor elements, such as what we had them put through during the 2006 & 07 Iditarod Sled Dog Races.  Our jumbo sized mitts measure approximately 14 1/2" - 368.3mm in length, 7.0" - 177.8mm in width in the hand area and 9 1/2" - 241.3mm in width at the hand opening.  Our mitts are made to handle any Arctic adventure that you can put them through and have been design sized so that you easily have ample room for using with activities that require you to wear gloves.

Our Mitts are built with our 7 Layer construction process (7 top & 7 bottom) that produces an incredible thermal insulation R-factor in excess of R10.5 in the area below the bottom of the hand and a R10.5 on the top of the hand, so conductive heat loss is not a problem with these mitts. The Outer Shell fabric is 100% Thermal Wind Blocking & DWR water resistant, while the first two Inner Shell layers are made from Highly Wicking Thermal material.  "NO ONE ELSE IN THE WORLD DOES THIS"!

We also feature our Exclusive Retractable Thumb Loc Strap for mounting these mitts to the handle bars of your Dog Sled, or for securing around your trekking poles when you're out on an Arctic Expedition.(the thumb loc straps are not designed to hold or keep the user from falling off of a moving or stationary object.  Only for attaching the mitts to an object, not the user with the user's weight)

We also build into our Mitts (2) two different options for minimizing convective heat loss, one is by tightening down on the Wrist Webbing Strap, or second by pulling on the Shock Cord tab that is located by the hand entry area of the mitt.

The last important thing to know, is that these are probably one of the "only" pair's of Winter Mitts that are designed to eliminate the heat loss that occurs when you grab onto a frozen object with your hands, which is known as conductive heat loss.  You won't need handle bar warmers to keep your hands warm with our Extreme Element Arctic Thermal Mitts!

SIZING:

  • The Large mitts work great for medium sized hands, when you will be wearing this mitt with a "thick" insulated protective glove on your hand inside of the mitt, like you do during mushing or arctic trekking.  THIS IS THE SUGGESTED MITT FOR FEMALE DOG MUSHERS with a good hand grip.
  • The Large mitts also will work good if you have a large sized hand, but you will not be wearing any extra gloves on your hands and fingers at the same time.

We use only the highest quality USA manufactured synthetic polyester that meets U.S. Military specifications and other USA made insulation materials in our construction processes.  The Extreme Element Arctic Thermal Mitt's w/Thumb Loc also contain 20% "Earth friendly green" technical fabric material that is made from re-cycled plastic bottles.

Some people may think these mitts are expensive, but if you take into account the technical fabrics and materials that we construct these with along with an average of 11 to 12 hours of labor that we put into each and every pair (you do the math) and you'll figure out that they're a bargain at our selling price.
